Philips Ingenuity CT at West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital

Who/where
West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital is a community hospital located in Sulphur, LA, that provides a broad range of health care services to communities in Southwest Louisiana and Southeast Texas. In 2011, West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital became the first community hospital in the US to purchase the Ingenuity CT scanner. The hospital viewed this 128-slice scanner as an ideal fit with its mission of providing advanced quality health care with attention to patient satisfaction and clinical excellence.

Challenge
Faced with an expiring lease on their existing CT scanner, the team recognized the opportunity to adopt advanced technology to enhance patient care and differentiate the hospital in the community.

Response
The Philips Ingenuity CT scanner is allowing the hospital to expand services within the community, to advance quality health care.

An important first
West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital faced a key decision with the impending expiration of the lease on its existing Brilliance CT 40-channel scanner. When the hospital learned about 128-slice Ingenuity CT technology, they embraced the opportunity to be the first community hospital in the United States to adopt this latest CT technology. They saw the Ingenuity CT scanner as a product that would allow them to advance patient care while differentiating the hospital from others in the region.

Low dose with high image quality
“In the Ingenuity CT, we saw a product that fit with our mission of providing advanced quality health care with attention to patient safety, patient satisfaction and clinical excellence,” says CEO Bill Hankins. “It allows us to improve dose management and deliver high-quality images to our physicians,” he continues. The hospital has incorporated the iDoseā“ reconstruction technique on the majority of protocols, and continues to allow physicians to personalize image quality at low dose.

Radiologist, Bruce Bordlee, M.D. adds, “Currently there’s an increased sensitivity to radiation dose. Ingenuity CT allows us to address many of those issues. In pediatrics, because of the number of slices and short scan time, many times you can complete studies without having to sedate.” We’re finding we’re able to use less contrast across a range of studies. The speed also makes it very beneficial in trauma cases.”

“We are very proud to be the first community hospital in the United States to offer 128-slice Ingenuity CT technology.” Bill Hankins - CEO, West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital

Putting the patient first
Ingenuity CT is allowing the hospital to offer enhanced services to the residents of Sulphur and beyond. Jake Richey, Imaging Services Director, notes the additional care made possible by the Ingenuity CT scanner. “We’ve seen a dramatic reduction in patient dose, especially in cardiac imaging,” he says. Bordlee concludes, “With Ingenuity CT, we believe we’re bringing the latest and greatest technology to the state. This is a premier system.”
