Case Study
Wang, Chen, M.D., Ph.D. Stockholm, Astrid Lindgren Children's Hospital
Ehnmark, Bo Stockholm, Astrid Lindgren Children's Hospital

Patient history:

A 6-hour-old infant with hydrocephalus was examined at Astrid Lindgren Children's Hospital.
Clinical symptoms included bulging of anterior and posterior fontanelles and wider than normal sutures between adjacent skull bones.

MR examination:

Achieva 1.5T with the Pediatric SENSE Head/Spine coil was used.

The examination confirmed the diagnosis of hydrocephalus; the cerebral aqueduct was blocked and CSF had accumulated within the ventricles.

Diagnosis:

The findings are consistent with hydrocephalus.
Hours after the MRI scan, the neurosurgeon placed a cerebral shunt.

Clinical impact of the Pediatric SENSE Head/Spine coil 1.5T:

With Achieva systems' ability to adjust the FOV while maintaining the same voxel size, Achieva 1.5T with the Pediatric SENSE Head/Spine coil has provided excellent visualization and high resolution in infant head and spine imaging.

The Pediatric SENSE Head/Spine coil comes with a special mattress that enables precise positioning of the coil centered on the patient table. The coil's small elements, integrated design and light weight have provided an easier way to use.
