Post-surgery cervical medulla

Patient history:

A patient who had undergone surgery for a hemangioblastoma in the cervical medulla was examined on Achieva 3.0T X-series at General Hospital St. Jan, Brugge, Belgium.

MR Examination:

Multi-echo FFE
Multi-echo FFE


On the axial Multi-echo FFE (m-FFE) image, the peripheral white matter and the central grey matter can be distinguished. The tissue changes caused by the surgery are visible in the white matter (arrow), medial to the cornu posterius of the grey matter. There is normal high signal intensity of the cornu anterius of the grey matter (arrowheads).


The SENSE NeuroVascular 16 coil was used.

Clinical impact of multi-echo FFE:

Multi-echo FFE is a fantastic sequence to see the differentiation between grey and white matter inside the medulla. m-FFE yields three images at different echo times plus a summation of the three images, which shows very good contrast. It works very well in both the cervical and thoracic spine.
