Preoperative MRI assessment of osteogenic sarcoma

Case Study
Pedersen, Erik, PhD, DMSc Aarhus University Hospital, Dept. Radiology • Denmark

Patient history

A young girl with an osteogenic sarcoma underwent a preoperative MRI at the department of Radiology of Aarhus University Hospital

MR examination

Ingenia 1.5T with dStream was used.

T2-weighted mDIXON TSE was perfromed. Acquiring this one sequence provides high quality fat suppresses images (mDIXON TSE water) as well as T2-weighted images wihtout fat suppression (mDIXON TSE in-phase). Two-station MobiView was also done.

The images demonstrate the superb fat suppression of mDIXON TSE.

Diagnosis

The images demonstrates the large tumor with a necrotic component and areas of fluid. The tumor extends down into the proximal part of femur. Edema is seen along the femoral shaft down to the knee and in the gluteal muscle.

Clinical impact

T2-weighted mDIXON TSE provides very homogenous fat supressed images. The two-station MobiView demonstrates the high quality mDIXON TSE fat suppression over a large region.

With mDIXON, the images with and without fast suppression are obtained in about half the time needed for two conventional scans.
