Leiden ultra-high field MRI research facility opens

Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC, Leiden, the Netherlands) organized a symposium on the occasion of the official opening of its Philips Achieva 7.0T whole body MR research facility. The event was held on September 6 and the official opening of the facility was carried out by Her Excellency Maria van der Hoeven, Dutch Minister of Economical Affairs.


With its ultra-high field strength, the Achieva 7.0T research system produces remarkable, high-detail images, allowing clinical researchers to better study the physiological and cognitive processes of the brain, as well as neurological diseases. Research at 7.0T will benefit Philips MR systems at all other field strengths. Due to the common system architecture innovations will be transferred to the clinical 1.5T and 3.0T systems.


LUMC's Achieva 7.0T is installed at the C.J. Gorter Centre for High Field MRI. As early as 1932 Professor Cornelis Gorter predicted the future possibility of measuring nuclear magnetism, which forms the basis for NMR and MRI technology. In 1973 Dr. Rob Locher, a former Ph.D. student of Prof. Gorter, performed the first MR experiments at Philips Research Laboratories. LUMC and Philips have been collaborating on clinical and technical MRI research since 1981.

Symposium features Nobel Prize laureate

Sir Peter Mansfield of the University of Nottingham, Nobel Prize laureate of 2003, was introduced by LUMC's Professor Mark van Buchem, and presented "MRI: Historical Perspectives." Also presenting to an enthusiastic symposium audience were Professor Ian Young of the Imperial College (London, United Kingdom) and Professor John Gore of Vanderbilt University (Nashville, Tennessee, USA).


The Virtual Institute for Seven Tesla Applications (VISTA) was introduced at the opening event as well. VISTA is a collaborative Dutch network involving the Leiden University Medical Center, University Medical Center Utrecht - where an Achieva 7.0T is being installed - and University Medical Center St. Radboud in Nijmegen. Members of VISTA work together to explore the clinical advantages of 7.0 Tesla MR imaging. Scientists from the partner institutions gave presentations at the meeting, as well as Drs. Harry Hendriks, CEO Philips Electronics, the Netherlands.
