RF coils using Solenoid Technology (ST) afford better signal-to-noise ratio, patient comfort and anatomical coverage in a vertical magnetic field - such as in the Panorama 1.0T system - than traditional surface coils operating in the horizontal fields of cylindrical higher field systems.

 

ST coils form a loop around the body part under study, an advantage over customary horizontal field RF coils that use only one effective signal-obtaining direction.

The vertical field advantage

RF coils and their internal coil loops are most efficient when positioned such that the coil's B1 field is perpendicular to the direction of the MR system's magnetic field. This simple physics rule provides the key advantage of Solenoid Technology RF coils, which operate in the vertical magnetic field of open systems, such as Panorama 1.0T.

 

"This means that in vertical field systems the anatomy is always inside the coil - the RF coil forms a loop around the body part. Thus, the RF coil is sensitive in both head-to-feet directions and in turn provides higher SNR. Also, the ST coil sensitivity extends beyond coil borders in the vertical field of Panorama 1.0T," says Ellen Gijsbers, Business Segment Director, RF Coils.

 

"Conversely, in cylindrical MR systems, the coil sensitivity is limited to within the coil borders," she continues. "The magnetic field is oriented horizontally, so a spine coil, for example, would be sensitive in two directions - up toward the anatomy, but also down, where there's nothing to image but the patient support."

Small ST Neck coil suitable for large anatomical coverage

Panorama 1.0T image quality in the neck actually rivals that of 1.5T cylindrical systems by virtue of Solenoid Technology, according to Maurits Wolleswinkel, Business Segment Director, Open MR.

 

"With an ST Neck coil, a small single loop very simply encloses the neck area, and provides imaging coverage that is three times the width of the 12 cm ST coil - this 36 cm is usually enough to cover from the circle-of-Willis to the aortic arch. This is due to the extra SNR in the head and feet directions," he says. "Plus, since the coil doesn't have to even touch the skin, it's very comfortable for the patient."

Penetration depth key for larger patients

Penetration depth of ST coils also is larger than that of standard RF coils, which use smaller internal coil loops. This is critical in largersized and obese patients, where signal must be obtained throughout the patient's girth, from the skin surface to the anatomical core. Penetration depth is especially important in spine imaging, where the depth of the area of interest varies per patient.

 

Philips' ST coils for Panorama 1.0T afford not only excellent penetration depth with the solenoid configuration, but can easily and comfortably enclose generous-sized patients.

 

"For large FOVs or very large patients, ST coils will always provide excellent homogeneity - there are no signal drop-offs," Gijsbers says.

Philips currently offers a portfolio of Solenoid Technology coils for Panorama 1.0T, each dedicated to the anatomy-of-interest: ST SENSE Head, ST Neck, ST Body/Spine M, ST Multi-purpose M, ST Multi-purpose S, ST Body/Spine XL, ST SENSE Wrist, ST SENSE Breast and ST Extremity. In addition, Philips is continuously developing more dedicated ST coils.
