Type of coil

The SENSE NeuroVascular coil (SENSE NV coil) is a rigid volume coil consisting of a coil base and a head portion.

Technical characteristics:

-> Synergy detection      -> Receive-only coil

-> SENSE compatible      -> CLEAR compatible

Dedicated headset for SENSE NV coil

As the SENSE NV coil is not compatible with the head set of the Q-Head coil, there is a dedicated headset for use with the SENSE NV coil. Its hearing protection is lower than with the Q-Head coil headset. The use of earplugs is mandatory on 3.0T and strongly advised on 1.5T in combination with this dedicated headset.

An alternative to the headset are the gray wig cushions which can be placed between the patient's head and the border of the coil.

Coil positioning

  • Place the coil base on the tabletop.
  • Place the patient on the coil base.
  • Attach the head portion to the coil base.

In order to facilitate isocenter positioning, the SENSE NeuroVascular coil has two markers: one in the middle of the coil in FH direction and one in the middle of the head portion.

Coil elements

The SENSE NV coil consists of 18 coil elements:

  • 8 head elements,
  • 4 neck elements,
  • 6 chest elements.

Coil element combinations

Combining the coil elements in two different ways results in the two SENSE NeuroVascular coils:

  • the 8-channel SENSE NV coil
  • the 16-channel SENSE NV coil

8-CHANNEL SENSE NV COIL

The 8-channel SENSE NV coil has two operating modes: the Head mode and the NV (NeuroVascular) mode. The figures below illustrate these modes.

Head mode:

The signal from each individual head coil element is directly routed to the Achieva Freewave.

This mode is preferred for head and brain imaging including intracranial MRA.

It provides excellent detail for small anatomical structures in the head.

NV mode:

The signals from the individual elements are combined:

  • 8 head elements to    3 channels,
  • 4 neck elements to    2 channels,
  • 6 chest elements to   3 channels

                                     --------------

-> resulting in an  8-channel NV mode

This mode is preferred for cervical spine, neck imaging including extracranial MRA.
The maximal recommended field of view (FOV) is 44 cm.

Note that the combiner is an intrinsic part of the coil.

Imaging parameters with respect to coil selection

  • Coil selection: SENSE NV-8
  • Coil mode: Head, NV (NeuroVascular)

16-CHANNEL SENSE NV COIL

The signal from the individual elements is directly routed to Achieva Freewave except for the 8 head elements which are combined to 6 channels:

  • 8 head elements to    6 channels,
  • 4 neck elements to    4 channels,
  • 6 chest elements to   6 channels

                                     --------------

      -> resulting in a   16-channel NV coil

Note that the combiner is an intrinsic part of the coil.

  • Coil selection:        SENSE NV-16
  • Channel selection:  H, N, AC, PC, HN, NAC, NPC, NACPC, HNACPC

                                             N    stands for Neck,

                                             AC  stands for Anterior Chest,

                                             PC  stands for Posterior Chest.
