ExamCard purpose

This ExamCard is applied to perform a high resolution examination of the inner ear in patients that suffer from tinnitus.


In this examination the SENSE Head coil is used for the brain scanning.

The SENSE Flex-S coil is used for the high resolution images of the IAC.

Patient set up

The SENSE Flex-S coil is positioned over the ears of the patient.

The head phone is used to fixate the SENSE Flex-S coil.

Finally the patient is positioned into the SENSE Head coil.

This way of positioning has 2 benefits:

  • The SENSE Flex-S coil is close to the ear for good signal to noise.
  • The fixation of the patient is good and the patient is not likely to move during the lengthy scans.

After the normal brain survey and the ref scans for both SENSE Head coil and SENSE Flex-S coil a detailed coronal survey is made to enable correct positioning of the high resolution scans of the inner ear.


A standard Dual SE sequence is used for imaging the brain with the SENSE Head coil. The scan time is 5:25 min. 19 slices of 6 mm slice thickness are acquired.


A T2 DRIVE of the IAC is acquired with the SENSE Flex-S coil to obtain ultra high resolution images of the inner ear without artifacts. This high resolution is needed to visualize small lesions of the IAC. SENSE was used to obtain these images of 0.3 x 0.6 x 0.7 mm voxel size in 8:37 minutes scan time.


Additionally Time of Flight angiography is performed without and with contrast. This is done to differentiate between arteries and veins in arteriovenous anomalies, to exclude glomus tumors and dural fistula's. If the patient suffers from venous trombosis, this can be seen on the Time of Flight after contrast injection. 180 slices, 0.5 x 0.5 x 0.5 mm voxels size, are acquired in 6:00 minutes scan time. The isotropic voxels prevent blurring of the MIP's. An out-of-phase echo time of 6.9 seconds enables visualization of more peripheral branches of the vessels. The SENSE Head coil is used.


Finally a T1W FFE PCA is performed with the SENSE Flex-S coil. The post contrast T1W FFE images are used to visualize possible tumoral lesions, labyrinthitis and meningeal enhancement. The scan time is 6:45 min. to obtain 100 slices of 0.6 mm slice thickness.
