ExamCard description

This Release 2.5.3 ExamCard is designed for imaging the abdomen on 3.0T using the SENSE XL Torso coil 16.

It provides T2-weighted scans with and without fat suppression and a T1-weighted fat suppressed sequence using the THRIVE technique to assist in the detection of abdominal abnormalities.

The PEAR respiration belt is used for respiratory triggering to allow many of the sequences to be performed with the patient breathing normally, allowing the sequences to be used with all patients.

SENSE is used on all sequences to enable high resolution.

All sequences are optimized to allow for 38 cm FH coverage. This is seen with coronal acquisitions and sagittal THRIVE where FH coverage is set for 38 cm.

For the axial acquisitions sequences are grouped into abdomen or pelvic geometries and allow for 30 mm of overlap and account for 38 cm of coverage.

Patient preparation

If only the upper abdomen is of interest, position the liver to the middle of the coil and then use the coil's center as the isocenter.

For multi-station exams adjust the position to allow for coverage of both the abdomen and pelvis. Ideally the laser position should be to the center of both groups.

Tips and hints

It is recommended to apply volume shim for all fat suppressed acquisitions.

In this ExamCard all Single Shot T2-weighted TSE acquisitions with fat suppression use a frequency offset of 210 Hz.

Position the coil carefully centered over the anatomy of interest. Center the laser to the marker indicating the coil's center (middle of all coil elements). Run the reference scan without table repositioning for optimized large field of view imaging with SENSE.

SENSE is used in all scans in this ExamCard. Apply SENSE in AP or RL directions for best results. In 3D volume studies two-directional SENSE may be applied. In the sagittal THRIVE acquisition a SENSE factor of 4 is applied.

Scanning a patient with the arms above the head generally gives best results.
