ExamCard purpose

This ExamCard is prepared for thoracic aorta imaging using steady state MRA.

It is designed for use on Achieva 1.5T XR release 3.2 with the SENSE  XL Torso coil.

It provides steady state MRA using 3D T1W IR with ECG-triggering and navigator respiratory compensation.


It was developed to overcome challenges of standard first-pass (FP) MRA that uses a 3D single or multiphase first-pass MRA sequence with an extracellular contrast agent without ECG gating. It requires one or more breath holds and the timing for acquisition needs to be quite perfect in order to capture the bolus. Motion artifacts often occur, especially in the aortic root, due to neglect of cardiac gating and respiratory motion compensation.

Steady state MRA performed using a T1-weighted 3D inversion recovery sequence with ECG-triggering and navigator respiratory compensation.


The inversion time in SS-MRA is set to create the highest contrast between the thoracic vessels and the surrounding tissue, and is chosen using Look-Locker sequence. Usually, the inversion time is in the range of 210-250 ms for a 1.5T scanner.


IR_TFE_LL is the Look Locker sequence to determine optimal inversion time.

Scan time is 16 sec, voxel size 2.43 x 2.59 x 10.0 mm.


3D_SS_CE_MRA is the steady state MRA sequence.

Scan time is 4:56 min, voxel size 1.00 x 1.00 x 3.00 mm.

Patient preparation

The SENSE XL Torso coil is used for this examination.

Contrast agent / injection protocol

Ablavar (Gadofosveset trisodium) was used as the contrast agent.

Refer to the manufacturer for guidance on dose and use.
