MRI of spine in scoliosis

Patient history:

An 11-year-old patient with congenital scoliosis underwent a routine x-ray study. The physician then referred the patient for an MRI spine exam to visualize the entire spinal cord.

MR examination:

In a scoliotic spine, it is always difficult to see the entire spinal cord in a single view using standard MR slice planning.

see example below.

standard sag T2WI

However, using the 3-point Planscan feature (3PPS), normally used for coronary imaging, the whole spinal cord can be demonstrated in a single view.

Procedure used to perform 3PPS in spine:

After the initial survey scan, measure transverse T2W slices covering the entire extent of the scoliosis.

Then open a sagittal (or coronal) T2W sequence. Use 3PPS and mark a point at the center of the spinal cord in the first, middle and last transverse slices.

Click compute plan. Slices will be arranged as shown below. The acquisition will now show the entire spinal cord in a single image.
