Ingenia 1.5T knee with and without using MARS protocol

In this case a knee with a metal implant is scanned. The series used for scanning are a comparison between scanning with and without the use of application tips for metal artifact reduction.

MR examination

The patient is positioned supine, feet first.
The dS Knee 16ch coil is used.

Tips and hints to reduce metal artifacts in sequences: 
  • Use TSE instead of FFE (also for the survey)
  • Use Uniformity Classic
  • Use short echo spacing and high TSE factor
  • Use a small WFS of 0.5 to 0.7
  • Use thin slices
  • Maintain good SNR (give up some in-plane resolution)
  • Use STIR, no spectral fat saturation


If you have to use a gradient echo the principles as outlined in the previous tips still apply.
