MR spectroscopy for treatment evaluation in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Patient history

A 47-year-old female, suffering from arterial hypertension since 2005.  In the past, the resection of lipogranuloma of the breast was performed. Fatty infiltration of the liver was detected by ultrasound in 2011.

MR examination

Achieva 3.0T TX with 32-channel SENSE Torso/Cardiac coil was used.

 

MR proton spectroscopy was performed in the liver to evaluate the concentration of lipids. After 6 month of treatment the examination was repeated to evaluate changes of liver lipids level after the treatment by the drug based on polyunsaturated fatty acids.

The T2W images were used for correct positioning of the voxel.

The voxel was positioned in the V segment of the liver, avoiding major vessels and ducts.

Voxel size is 20x20x20 mm.

Before treatment

Diagnosis

Comparison of liver spectra before and after treatment shows an evident decrease in fat.

Clinical value of MRI spectroscopy for the evaluation of treatment NAFLD

MR spectroscopy helps to non-invasively monitor the effect of treatment in a patient with NAFLD.
