MRI pelvis bilateral hips with prosthesis

Case Study

Golub, Joshua, M.D. Hillcrest Hospital Cleveland Clinic • USA

Patient history

63-year-old male with prostate cancer post robotic prostatectomy was referred to MRI prior to follow-up radiation treatment. Patient has history of bilateral hip replacements.

MR Examination

1.5T Achieva XR, release 2.6.3.7 with SENSE XL Torso coil 16 is used.

The patient was placed supine on the SENSE XL Torso coil so that the center of the anterior and posterior aspect of the coil was properly aligned with the center of the pelvis. Patient’s legs were rotated internally 15 degrees to allow for the femoral necks to be rotated into the true coronal plane. Patient's pelvis was then isocentered within the bore. Sequences were optimized by using large bandwidths and large field of views.

The images show great contrast and definition of the soft tissue, even near the metallic implants.

Diagnosis

The exam was completed in order to plan for post prostatectomy radiation treatment.
The high resolution images provided superb visualization of the soft tissues and boney structures of the pelvic cavity.
No follow up exams needed to be completed for the treatment planning.

Clinical value

Thanks to MRI with the metal artifact reduction sequences, the patient was able to have a superb diagnostic study of the pelvis without ionizing radiation exposure.
Large bandwidths and large field of views ultimately make these sequences excellent for imaging.
