Small aneurysm on 3D TOF MR angiography and DSA

Patient history

A patient with a small cerebral aneurysm, demonstrated with invasive DSA, underwent noninvasive, non-contrast MRA using 3D time-of-flight (TOF). The examination took place in The Sixth Affiliated People’s Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China.

MR examination

MR angiography was done on Achieva 3.0T with an 8-channel head coil.

 

3D T1W FFE was used with TR 35 ms, TE 7 ms, flip angle 20 degrees, FOV 250×190×108 mm, matrix 732 × 1024, 4 slabs, 180 slices of 0.8 mm. Scan time was 8:56 min.

 

MIP and volume-rendered images were reconstructed.

Single-artery highlighting method was used to reduce arterial overlay.

Diagnosis

MR angiography using 3D TOF (time-of-flight) allows clear visualization of small cerebral aneurysms similar to DSA.

Impact of using 3D TOF MRA for imaging smal aneurysms

Both MR and CT can be used to image aneurysms, but MR angiography can be performed without contrast agent, and without ionizing radiation it is not influenced by skull bones.

 

This non-invasive 3D TOF MRA method provides excellent images for the visualization of small aneurysms with a high degree of accuracy and sensitivity. MIP and volume rendered images allows viewing from multiple angles.
