Case Study
Dorn, Eric, M.D. Glendale, Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin USA
Ahrens, Mark, BS RT (R) (MR) Glendale, Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin USA

Patient history

A 52-year-old woman with laxity and pain after falling on the ice underwent an MR examination on the Achieva 1.5T SE at Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin.

MR examination

The Achieva 1.5T SE with the 8-channel SENSE Wrist coil was used.

Small FOV high resolution images. There is a displaced ulnar collateral ligament next to edema within the sagittal band (Axial T1 CLEAR). The ulnar collateral ligament lies superficial to adductor aponeurosis. There is a thickened and displaced portion of ulnar collateral ligament (Sagittal T2 FS fSE).

Diagnosis

There is a displaced distal rupture of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) thumb metacarpophalangeal joint. The ligament lies superficial to the adductor aponeurosis, a Stenner lesion.

Clinical impact of the Achieva 1.5T SE:

The Achieva 1.5T SE offers a tenfold improvement in homogeneity compared with standard entry-level systems, and this reflects dramatically on the system's off-center imaging. Achieva 1.5T SE provides very good fat-suppressed imaging with the arms by the sides. With the 8-channel SENSE Wrist coil beautiful image quality is seen. The system is able to still maintain good SNR while working at these very small FOVs.
