Torn meniscus with posterior dislocation

Case Study
Goumas, Chris, M.D. Palo Alto Medical Foundation USA

This patient was scanned on Achieva 3.0T X-series at Palo Alto Medical Clinic Sports Medicine Center.

MR Eamination

All images were acquired with the SENSE Knee coil.
FOV 120 mm, slice thickness 2.5 mm were used.

MR images an interpretation

Top row images visualize disruption of the anterior meniscal horn body junction of the lateral meniscus with meniscal tissue of the body and posterior horn displaced posteriorly.

Bottom row images are from similar slice location with and without fat suppression.

Yellow arrows indicate the original location of the meniscus and posterior displacement.

Diagnosis

Disruption of the anterior meniscal horn body junction of the lateral meniscus with meniscal tissue of the body and posterior horn displaced posteriorly.

Impact of Achieva 3.0T X-series imaging:

A 3.0T system has significantly higher SNR compared to 1.5T systems, and Dr. Goumas uses that to its full benefit. He uses a smaller FOV than most, with a higher matrix. The images demonstrate the excellent spatial resolution and contrast.
