Clinical News
Curran, John Phoenix Children's Hospital • USA
Miller, Jeffrey, M.D. Phoenix Children's Hospital • USA

In a research study at Phoenix Children’s Hospital (PCH) clinicians have been studying the value of APT weighted imaging in diagnostic and post-therapy MRI of children with brain tumor. Amide Proton Transfer (APT) weighted imaging is CEST technique.

Looking for improved confidence in brain tumor diagnoses

APT signal is based on the concentration of endogenous proteins and peptides that are typically present in high-grade brain tumor.

Initial results of Dr. Curran and Dr. Miller suggest that APT weighted imaging can strengthen confidence in determining brain tumor grade and extent of residual tumor post-surgery.

Differentiating low and high-grade brain tumors

APT can be a valuable addition to an MRI exam as APT signal has been observed to commonly correlated positively with tumor grade, while gadolinium enhancement not always scales with tumor grade. The team has added APT to approximately 70 MRI studies of pediatric brain tumor patients.
