SENSE factor and direction in shoulder and knee imaging

Application Tip
Teitsma, Loretta Philips Healthcare Philips Global
van den Heuvel, Martina Philips Healthcare Philips Global

Knee imaging

  • Used coil: SENSE Flex-M or SENSE Flex-S coil
  • It is best to position the two coil elements anterior and posterior
  • The preferred SENSE direction (for optimal SNR) is orthogonal to the coil elements (AP)

Sagittal image orientation:

SENSE direction: AP optimal, FH possible (strange noise patterns)

SENSE factor: no more than 1.5 (noise breakthrough)

Coronal image orientation:

SENSE direction: LR possible but not optimal (strange noise patterns )

SENSE factor: no more than 1.5 (noise breakthrough)

Axial image orientation:

SENSE direction: AP optimal

SENSE factor: 2.0 possible with 2 NSA

Fold-over suppression to avoid intrinsic fold-over

Scan times: 2-3 minutes.

Shoulder imaging

  • Used coil: SENSE Flex-M or SENSE Flex-L coil
  • Position the coil elements as described in the Application Tip "SENSE Flex-M coil: positioning for a shoulder examination".

Coronal image orientation:

SENSE direction: FH as well as LR are possible, but not optimal.

Sagittal image orientation:

SENSE direction: AP is optimal.

SENSE factor: 2 is possible.

Note: be careful in angulating to avoid intrinsic fold-over.

Axial image orientation:

SENSE direction: AP is optimal.

SENSE factor: 2 is possible.

Use 2 NSA and fold-over suppression.

NOTE: be careful in angulating to avoid intrinsic fold-over.

Scan times: 2-3 minutes.
