ExamCard purpose

ExamCard for sedated children of 8-30 kg (<6-7 years), using SENSE Cardiac coil.

Purpose of the ExamCard is to assess the presence of possible vascular rings (anomalous arteries congenitally encircling the trachea and oesophagus, at times producing pressure symptoms). Indication for general anesthesia (GA) should be generous, and GA is mandatory if audible stridor is present under resting conditions. If performed under GA, (1) see related ExamCard including 3D contrast-enhanced MRA (to follow), (2) place a nasogastric tube that will help to visualize the oesophagus.

All scans are adapted for high (100 beats/min) cardiac frequencies.

ExamCard overview

C_Vascular rings
Scan 1Surv 3x1
Scan 2Ref Syn-Cardiac : uses 8 NSA because no breathhold is possible
Scan 3Surv cor-sag : plan scan using single phase TFE with high TFE factor
Scan 4Inflow PE-no : gives nice overview over all thoracic vessels. No partial echo is allowed to detect turbulent blood flow, indicative of the presence of stenosis.
Scan 5TSE-rt axial : respiratory gated TSE (mixed weighting) with high in-plane resolution.
Scan 6TSE-rt sag : respiratory gated TSE (mixed weighting) with high in-plane resolution.
Scan 7TSE-rt cor : respiratory gated TSE (mixed weighting) with high in-plane resolution.
Scan 8Rest period ax : single slice to define cardiac rest period, in order to optimize trigger delay and acquisition duration in following scan.
Scan 93D_SSFP syst : 3D whole-heart scan for cardiac morphology. Sagittal volume including all cardiovascular structures of the mediastinum.
