ExamCard Purpose

General examination of the cranial contents, aquaduct of Sylvius - foramen of Monroe - magnum foramen. Post-gadolinium sequences are accomplished 5 minutes post injection to visualize lesions with abnormal vascularity. Recommended if hydrocephalus or CSF flow deficiency are probable diagnosis.


The T1W_3D_TFE sagittal pre- and post-contrast (scans 8/9) are reformatted into coronal and axial planes.

3 Variations:


Aqueduct of Sylvius:

Q-flow measuring velocities between the 3rd & 4th ventricles.


Foramen of Monroe:

Q-flow ensures comunicative flow between 1st & 2nd ventricles (lateral ventricles).


Foramen Magnum:

More often used to demonstrate flow deficiencies associated with Chiari malformations. Velocities are measured 5 times:


1- entire foramen;

2- anterior to the cervical cord;

3- right of cord;

4- left of cord;

5- posterior to cord.


Depending on the possible obstructing properties of the malformation velocities should increase over the entire area of the foramen magnum and greatly deminish in the area of obstruction.
