ExamCard purpose

This release 2.1.3 ExamCard was created by the Palo Alto Medical Foundation for routine imaging of ankle or foot with the 8-channel SENSE Foot/Ankle coil using small FOV and high matrix. Each protocol has been customized to have an acceptable scan time of approximately five minutes or less.

Survey: images are acquired in three orthogonal planes. The ankle or foot is positioned as close to the isocenter as possible.

 

Axial, sagittal and coronal PD FS: these proton density weighted fat suppressed protocols use SPAIR, balanced with a TI to give a slight differentiation between muscle and fat tissues. These protocols also make use of an asymmetric profile order to minimize TSE blurring effects while allowing a TE value to be used for increased signal. As a result of these signal improving benefits, the matrix and FOV of each of these protocols are minimized for optimal resolution. Due to the unaffected leg being elevated, foldover suppression is not selected for the coronal sequence. This results in this protocol benefitting from a signal averaging of multiple NSAs.

 

Axial, sagittal and coronal T1: these sequences also use an asymmetric profile order to minimize potential blurring and because of the higher signal obtained, compared to their fat suppressed counter parts, a higher resolution can be produced from these protocols. However, like the coronal proton density weighted sequence, the T1W coronal sequence does not use foldover suppression and can further benefit from a signal averaging of multiple NSAs.

Patient preparation

For both studies the patient is positioned feet first, supine, with the ankle or foot placed in the isocenter as much as possible. The unaffected leg is elevated and supported with padding for comfort along the side of the 8-channel SENSE Foot/Ankle coil. Elevating the leg enables the coronal protocols to be acquired without having to use foldover suppression.
