Renal arteries (contrast-enhanced) - Maastricht

This ExamCard will use SENSE to improve the resolution and speed of the contrast-enhanced renal arteries sequence.

  • The patient's arms have to be positioned on the abdomen to prevent foldover.
  • A respiratory sensor is connected to get feedback on the breathing commands during the examination.



  • Scan 2 and 3 are BFFE sequences (high signal of blood) to provide information about the positioning of the renal arteries.


  • Run a sagittal BFFE if you encounter problems finding the renal arteries on scan 2 and 3.


  • Be aware that there is no foldover involved when planning the SENSE scan. Eventually adjust the RFOV.


  • Start the timing sequence (wait for a manual start).


  • Start the injection (see injection protocol timing-renal) and the timing sequence simultaneously.


  • Determine the time delay from the timing sequence. Look for an image with optimal renal artery filling. If no clear renal artery filling is visible, take a time delay as follows: first enhancement of the aorta + 3 seconds. Take this as your time delay for scanning.


  • Start the 3D GADSENSE sequence and wait for a manual start. Start injection pump (see injection protocol MRA-Renal) .


  • Start giving the patient breathing commands 10 to 15 seconds prior to the timing delay, press the manual start in inspiration.


  • Generate radial MIP's from the 3D GADSENSE in VolumeView.

Injection protocol


  • 3ml/s => 2   ml (GADO)
  • 3ml/s => 25 ml (NaCL)




  • 3ml/s => 35 ml (GADO)
  • 3ml/s => 25 ml (NaCL)
